Swansea Kendo Club aims to bring Kendo to everyone who wants to study it. To train safely we need to behave with respect and consideration for each other. Repeated or serious breaches of this code will result in expulsion from the club.

1. General Behaviour

  1. Be considerate of your fellow members' safety.
  2. Respect and be tolerant of people's differences and do not discriminate against anyone on the grounds of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or ability.
  3. Report any incidents of harassment or bullying to an instructor, even if you are just a witness.
  4. Treat your fellow members with respect and appreciate that everyone has different levels of skill and experience.
  5. Make the club a welcoming and friendly place to be.
  6. Support and encourage your fellow members.
  7. Be a good sport, train by the rules and have fun.
  8. Arrive to practice on time. If you are running late, let an instructor know.
  9. Get involved in club decisions — it is your club too.

2. Entering the Dojo

  1. Use appropriate changing facilities. Do not get changed in the dojo.
  2. Remove shoes before entering the dojo.
  3. Rei to the dojo on entry and exit. If you are unable to bow for any reason, an appropriate sign of respect must be demonstrated.

3. During the Session

  1. Follow the instructor's guidance, unless you feel something is unsafe.
  2. If you feel something is unsafe, let the instructor know immediately.
  3. Let the instructor know if you need to stop or leave the dojo at any point.
  4. When training with a partner, rei to each other before and after each exercise. If you are unable to bow for any reason, an appropriate sign of respect must be demonstrated.
  5. Do not swear in the dojo.
  6. Do not smoke, including e-cigarettes or vaping, in the dojo.
  7. Do not consume alcohol or illegal substances before or during practice.

5. Visiting Other Clubs

  1. Let an instructor know your intentions before visiting another club.
  2. Contact the other club in advance. You can ask an instructor for an introduction if needed.
  3. Be aware that other clubs may have different policies and safety standards.
  4. When visiting another club you are representing Swansea Kendo Club and this code of conduct still applies.

6. Your Rights as a Member

As a member of Swansea Kendo Club you have the right to:

  1. Enjoy your time with us and know that you are safe.
  2. Be told who you can talk to if something is not right.
  3. Be listened to.
  4. Be included and contribute to decisions within the club.
  5. Be respected and treated fairly by instructors and fellow members.
  6. Feel welcomed and valued, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or ability.
  7. Be encouraged and supported to develop your skills.
  8. Be looked after in the event of an accident or injury, and have your emergency contact informed if needed.

7. BKA Membership

All members must hold current membership of the British Kendo Association (BKA), which provides insurance cover for all members.

8. Club Fees

Members are asked to pay an attendance fee each session. If you have any difficulties with fees please speak to an instructor — we will not prevent any member from practising due to financial difficulties. Members who have not discussed their situation with us, are not paying fees, and are no longer BKA members will be assumed to have ended their membership.

Concerns, Complaints & Safeguarding

If you wish to report a concern, complaint or incident — even as a witness — please speak to one of our instructors. If you do not feel comfortable doing so, you may contact the British Kendo Association directly.

  • All complaints will be taken seriously and investigated.
  • Anyone reporting an incident, and any victims, will be protected from retaliation.
  • If the report involves only club members, we will investigate internally.
  • If the report involves a member of another club, the leader of that club will be approached.
  • If the report involves an instructor or officer of any club, the BKA will be approached.
